Patients come to Precision Periodontics & Implant Dentistry with a wide variety of periodontal needs—some of the most common involving receding gums or bone tissue. This recession can result from a number of influences, such as gum disease, trauma, or gradual wear. Dr. Daniel Lauer strives to offer solutions for this recession by providing state-of-the-art treatment options that can provide long-term improvement. With Straumann® Emdogain™, he can effectively help regenerate patients’ soft and hard periodontal tissue that have receded.
Emdogain™ is an enamel matrix protein-based gel that can effectively preserve tooth health by reversing the effects of gum disease, ultimately helping prevent loose teeth. This product is used along with periodontal surgery to help naturally stimulate new cell growth. Before Emdogain™, no method was available to regenerate the tissues that support the teeth. By using this advanced system, Dr. Lauer is able to provide an alternative to traditional recession treatments, such as taking a gum graft, often with less discomfort.

AfterEmdogain™ is an enamel matrix protein-based gel that can effectively preserve tooth health by reversing the effects of gum disease, ultimately helping prevent loose teeth.

There are several advantages to using Emdogain™ in your periodontal therapy, and Dr. Lauer will help you understand how the solution can aid in your long-term results. In general, you can experience the following benefits:

Traditional gum grafting involves surgically taking a small piece of tissue, often from the roof of the mouth, and attaching it to the areas of recession to restore gum coverage. While gum grafting remains an effective and widely used technique, it can sometimes involve additional healing time and post-operative discomfort due to the donor site. By contrast, Emdogain™ uses an enamel matrix protein gel to stimulate the body’s natural ability to regenerate bone, ligament, and gum tissue, without the need for a second surgical site. Many patients experience less discomfort and faster healing, along with more natural-looking results. In some cases, Emdogain™ can even be used as an adjunct to gum grafting to further enhance tissue regeneration and stability. Dr. Lauer will review both options with you during your consultation and explain which approach, or combination of treatments, can best achieve your periodontal health and aesthetic goals.
Emdogain™ may be an excellent option for patients experiencing gum or bone loss. You may be a candidate if you have receding gums, early bone loss, or exposed tooth roots but still have enough supporting tissue to respond to regenerative therapy. This treatment is ideal for patients who wish to preserve their natural teeth and avoid more invasive procedures when possible.
During your consultation, Dr. Lauer will perform a thorough periodontal evaluation, including X-rays and clinical assessment, to determine if Emdogain™ is the most effective solution for your needs. In some cases, it may be recommended alongside other periodontal treatments to maximize regeneration and healing.

To begin your Emdogain™ treatment, a local anesthetic will first be administered to the treatment area. At this point, the gums are surgically lifted to expose the entirety of the tooth root. The root surface is cleaned to ensure any calculus or plaque are removed, after which the area will be rinsed with a sterile saline. To further treat the tooth root, PrefGel is applied to the root surface for two minutes to condition the area. This process is then completed by a sterile saline rinsing the site.
Immediately after your periodontal procedure, a prefilled syringe of Emdogain™ is applied to the site. This is done with a needle that injects the gel to cover the entire root’s surface. Once the gel has been generously applied, the gum tissue is then sutured closed.

Throughout your recovery, you will have follow-up visits with Dr. Lauer to ensure your periodontal tissues are healing properly. You should begin to notice improvement within the first few weeks after treatment. As healing progresses, Dr. Lauer will monitor your soft tissue response and provide personalized guidance to help you care for the treated area at home. Maintaining good oral hygiene and following post-operative instructions are essential to supporting optimal regeneration.
Your hard and soft tissues should continue to regenerate over the course of several months, after which point you can enjoy your final results. Clinical studies have shown this significant improvement can last up to 10 years. To ensure your treatment is long lasting, it is important that you follow best oral hygiene practices, which will be discussed during your appointment.
The cost of Emdogain™ varies based on the extent of treatment and whether additional procedures are performed. Dr. Lauer will provide a detailed estimate during your consultation.
Compared to traditional gum grafting, Emdogain™ can often be more cost-effective, as it typically involves less surgical time, quicker recovery, and no tissue harvesting. Insurance coverage for regenerative treatments varies, but our team can help you review your benefits and estimate any out-of-pocket costs.
