Benefits of Laser Orthodontic Therapies

Because of the stresses and pressures that many orthodontic treatments place on the teeth while they move into a straighter position, gum care is often necessary to address both functional and cosmetic issues. Laser orthodontic therapies offer a number of benefits over more traditional treatment methods. Some of these benefits include:

  • Virtually painless treatment
  • Reduced bleeding
  • Reduced recovery time
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Extraordinarily precise treatment

Frenectomy

A frenectomy is often performed just before or after orthodontic treatment to make sure the upper or lower two front teeth don’t move too far apart from each other. The frenum is a piece of tissue running between these sets of teeth, preventing them from moving in opposite directions and developing a gap in the center. If the frenum is too short or too thick, the two front teeth may become separated. With advanced Waterlase MD laser technology, Dr. Lauer can correct the problem without the need for surgery.

A frenectomy can also be performed to reduce teeth sensitivity and to decrease gum recession. The Waterlase MD laser procedure makes it possible to perform a virtually painless frenectomy in a relatively quick procedure.

Gingivectomy

Many people are affected by what’s often referred to as a “gummy smile,” characterized by excessive gum tissue around the teeth, making them appear a bit too short. A gingivectomy is a cosmetic gum recontouring procedure designed to make the gums appear more balanced and symmetrical with the teeth. This procedure utilizes a state-of-the-art laser to precisely reshape the gums along the teeth. Also known as “gum lifting,” gingivectomy treatments are typically painless and require little to no recovery time following the procedure. With gingivectomy procedures, you can start smiling with confidence and really show off your beautiful teeth!
