Ridge Preservation
Careful management of extraction sockets after tooth extraction prevents unsightly bone loss and a better cosmetic outcome of tooth replacement. Traditionally when teeth are extracted there can be collapse of the bony ridge and gum tissue in that area. Today when we extract teeth we try to preserve and actually regenerate new bone into the extracted area. Once the tooth is carefully removed, the socket is filled with a bone graft material, which is then covered by a barrier membrane. The barrier membrane acts to keep the gum tissue out and let new bone tissue grow from within. Once healed the area will be better suited for either an implant or other type of restoration chosen by your dental team.
